Overview

BU Navigation is a WordPress plugin designed to help users efficiently manage large numbers of pages on their website by streamlining the page hierarchy management process. It replaces the default “Page Parent” and “Menu Order” dropdowns with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface, making it easier to organize pages. The plugin offers an “Edit Order” screen that provides a comprehensive view of the site’s structure for bulk ordering tasks and features a Content Navigation widget that generates a customizable sidebar navigation list based on the natural page hierarchy. Additionally, the Navigation Block helps create navigation menus based on customizable parent posts, and the “Add a Link” tool allows users to seamlessly incorporate external links into navigation lists. Themes that support the primary navigation feature can utilize a primary navigation list based on page order, offering an alternative to managing separate navigation lists. Users can also adjust navigation labels and hide specific pages or sections from menus through the “Primary Navigation” settings. For more detailed information and developer resources, visit the plugin’s GitHub repository or the detailed page at http://developer.bu.edu/bu-navigation/.

User sentiment analysis

Users appreciate this WordPress plugin primarily for its simplicity and effectiveness in organizing pages, child and parent pages, and hierarchical custom post types. It simplifies moving pages around, making it particularly valuable for page-heavy sites. The visual representation of the page hierarchy and functionality to handle widget behavior is also highlighted. However, some users have reported critical issues such as the editing/text area not responding to keystrokes in WordPress 4.9.1, problems with z-indexing in the drag-and-drop interface, and incompatibility with the Post Forking plugin on WP 3.6 RC 1. Despite these drawbacks, it is praised for saving time, being user-friendly, and well-supported.

Hi, I loved this Plugin earlier, but unfortunately it is not possible to use any more. The reason is that the editing/text area does not receive key strokes with this Plugin activated. Thereby editing of pages is not possible in WordPress 4.9.1. This topic was modified 6 years, 7 months ago by pilotspelman.

There are some issues with the z-indexing of the drag-and-drop interface. Also, sometimes moved page “bubbles” don’t rearrange the page tree in real time like they should.

Solves so many requirements, including widget behavior, for Page-heavy sites! Easy way to move pages around. Adding the often-requested, just add external link here please. Compare to Nested Pages plugin for behavior and ability to place in menu positions.

Great plugin. It simplifies the concept of having child and parent pages (or hierarchal Custom Post Types). I always train my backend users how to move things into areas that they are able to publish in (using BU’s Section Editor Plugin) and it just clicks. Also the visual of where it is in the big scheme of things is perfect. Thanks for creating such a great plugin.
