Overview

The SiteGuard WP Plugin is a comprehensive security tool designed to enhance WordPress security, focusing primarily on defending against brute force login attacks. The plugin offers multiple features including Admin Page IP Filter, which restricts access to the admin page based on IP addresses; Rename Login, which allows the renaming of the default login page to deter unauthorized access; and CAPTCHA, which adds a layer of human verification to minimize automated attacks and comment spam. Additional functionalities include Login Lock, which blocks repeated failed login attempts; Login Alert, which sends email notifications for login activities; and Fail Once, which purposely fails the first login attempt to thwart password list attacks. The plugin also disables potentially vulnerable features such as Pingback and Block Author Query to protect user data. Moreover, it includes an Update Notify system to keep the WordPress core, plugins, and themes up-to-date. For advanced users, the WAF Tuning Support function helps to fine-tune Web Application Firewall (WAF) settings to prevent false positives while maintaining security. However, the plugin does have some limitations, including non-support for WordPress multisite functionality and specific web server and PHP library requirements.

Admin Page IP Filter

  • Protects the management page (wp-admin) from unauthorized access.
  • Returns a 404 (Not Found) error to IP addresses that haven't logged in.
  • Records IP addresses upon login and allows access to the management page.
  • Sequentially deletes IP addresses that haven't logged in for more than 24 hours.

Rename Login

  • Reduces vulnerability to brute force and password list attacks.
  • Changes the default login page name (wp-login.php) to a custom name.
  • Initial login page name is set to 'login_<5 random digits>' but can be customized.

CAPTCHA

  • Reduces vulnerability to brute force and password list attacks.
  • Helps in reducing comment spam.
  • Allows selection between hiragana and alphanumeric characters for CAPTCHA.

Login Lock

  • Prevents automated attacks by blocking IP addresses after a specified number of failed login attempts.
  • Does not lock individual user accounts.
  • Blocks the connection source IP address for a specified time after reaching the login failure limit.

User sentiment analysis

Users appreciate the WordPress plugin for its simplicity, efficiency, and comprehensive security features. It effectively reduces spam accounts and provides easy-to-follow setup instructions, making it accessible even for beginners. Many find the interface user-friendly and flexible, and it allows them to change the login page URL easily. The login protection features are particularly valued for reducing unauthorized access attempts. However, some users face issues such as images not displaying for image authentication after updates and problems with multi-site mode. There are also concerns about the login URL being easily discoverable and suggestions for incorporating Google’s reCAPTCHA for improved security. Despite these drawbacks, the plugin is largely seen as a useful and effective tool.

After a recent update, images for image authentication are often not displayed. Do you know what’s causing it? thank you.

This topic was modified 3 years, 5 months ago by tsutlnps149.
