Overview

The Widget Importer & Exporter plugin is designed to facilitate seamless widget management across multiple WordPress sites, making it easy to transfer, back up, and share widgets. The plugin allows users to export all active widgets into a JSON file with a .wie extension, which can be imported into other sites or used for restoration purposes. The import process is user-friendly, providing detailed feedback on the status of each widget and taking into account various scenarios such as inactive widgets, duplicates, and unsupported widgets. Additionally, theme developers can leverage this tool to offer sample widgets to users. It also supports developers by providing specific actions and filters for customization, and encourages contributions and issue reporting via GitHub.

User sentiment analysis

Users appreciate the WordPress plugin for its ability to easily and efficiently export and import widgets, saving them significant time and effort, especially during site migrations or theme changes. Many praise its user-friendly interface and the manual paste feature for .wie code, which addresses import issues. The plugin is immensely helpful for developers cloning sites or testing layouts, and it successfully retains custom widget settings such as “Conditional Widgets.” However, users point out drawbacks such as occasional compatibility issues, spammy advertisements, and misleading security warnings pushing for hosting services. Problems with the plugin recognizing its own export files and errors with PHP 7.0 are noted, impacting its reliability for some users.

I don’t like Gutenberg but since it seems to be here to stay, one has to adapt. Exporting and importing a full widget built with several blocks seems to be not possible. This plugin solves that problem. Thank you very much!
