Overview

WP SMTP is a WordPress plugin designed to facilitate sending emails via SMTP rather than using the default PHP mail() function, ensuring better email deliverability and reliability. The plugin integrates a configuration settings page within the WordPress dashboard, specifically under "Dashboard"->"Settings"->"WP SMTP", where users can input their email settings. It supports various popular email services, such as Gmail, Yahoo!, Microsoft, 163, and QQ, providing convenient icons to automatically populate settings for these services. If the "From" email address or "SMTP Host" fields are incorrectly filled or left blank, the plugin will not reconfigure the wp_mail() function, maintaining its stability. Initially developed by BoLiQuan and currently maintained by WPOmnia, the plugin can be easily installed and activated, enhancing the emailing capabilities of any WordPress site.

User sentiment analysis

Users appreciate this plugin for its ease of configuration and its effectiveness in ensuring emails from WordPress sites are properly sent using different email services like Gmail and Zoho. Many users found it simple to set up and noted that it resolved issues related to emails being marked as "from WordPress" or going into spam folders. The plugin is praised for its reliability and compatibility with various themes and other plugins. However, significant drawbacks include issues with updates that erase credentials without warning, leading to email service disruptions. Security concerns are also raised, particularly regarding storing credentials in plain text, which has been linked to data breaches like the Panama Papers incident. Users also experienced difficulties with Gmail authentication and lack of debug information when using certain mail services.

SMTP Error: Could not authenticate. gmail. It’s not working. I think it’s google crap. When configuring the plugin, it does not display Google’s “approval” window, which in recent years necessarily appears when configuring mail clients. This topic was modified 1 month, 2 weeks ago by d095614.

With the addition of a default Reply-To, it would be perfect for the websites I install SMTP plugins on.

Settings got messed up upon automatic update without any kind of alert/notification for re-entering the login/authentication details. No wp-mail fallback when settings got misconfigured. One whole week of emails lost and complaints from our customers. Thank you
